2008 HARVEST

Collecting Peppermint for Distillation

Collecting Peppermint for Distillation

2008 harvest began in early June with the German chamomile, the melissa, peppermint, English chamomile and lavenders have followed on. August started with some wet and stomry weather and this slowed harvesting slightly. Herb distillation continued on and off well into October this season which ios much later than normal and we had to fit it around all the other crop harvesting on the farms We have also distilled many other products for other growers such as lavender, Thyme, Sage and Lovage.
Angelica roots were distilled in early November, along with some more lovage leaves and a root trial. Quality has been generally quite good with the distilleries great steam capabilities excelling in the damp times. Yields have been variable but in general it looks as if they are down again which will see some products in short supply

2007 Season Review

Another 2007 storm brewing

Another 2007 storm brewing

What a year 2007 turned out to be, with possibly the wettest summer on record it never seemed to stop raining. Although we were very lucky that we did not get the flooding that occurred in many parts of the UK which had disastrous effects on many crops the yields and harvesting of many of the herbs was affected. Yields of all of the essential oils were down with possibly the chamomiles being worst affected. The German chamomile had developed very well but at flowering there was much rain and wind which resulted in many flower heads being knocked to the ground and being unharvestable. Around 8 acres were never harvested due to all the flowers being destroyed. The English chamomile faired slightly better but very little sunshine during May/June had the effect of reducing the development of flowers and thus oil yield was reduced. Some of the other UK distillers in wetter parts of the country had crops of lavender and chamomile that were impossible to harvest either due to not being able to get the machinery into the fields in the wet condition or crops just simply washed away.
